Excellent oven for all types of cooking
5/5
Looks / build quality - The first thing that stands out with this oven is the quality of the build. The top control panel is a glass covered black which looks really good and contrasts the silver surrounds very well. The control buttons are chunky and feel sturdy. They pop in and out to improve the sleek design and allow easy cleaning. There is a digital clock and timer which is adjusted using two touch buttons on the same panel. Further down, the oven doors are not too heavy but again feel like they will last. Each oven has a halogen light that comes on with cooking, but can also be turned on without heat, for example, when cleaning.
Top oven - the smaller top oven is 34 litres. It has a conventional oven, bottom-fired oven, small and large grill function as well as a cleaning function. We have used this oven primarily as a grill. This grill heats up quickly and effectively. There are two grill settings, which allow only a portion of the grill to heat up if you are doing something a bit smaller, e.g. cheese on toast. The oven is large enough to fit parts of a Sunday roast in, e.g.tray of roast potatoes and carrots, but would struggle to fit a joint of meat in. However, we have found that the cooking quality is not compromised in this smaller oven. The smaller oven comes with one grill tray and one oven shelf. Having had previous Neff ovens, this model does not include the grill pan wire shelf which we have found invaluable over the years and this is something that we feel should be included. Additionally, there is no grill pan handle which is not a huge problem but would have been nice to be in the pack. Please note that the smaller oven does not have the telescopic sliders.
The main oven is 71 litres. It has 4 shelves, 1 of which has the telescopic shelf sliders. The bottom oven comes with two shelves. It is rare that a 3rd shelf would be used in this oven, but if so can be taken out of the smaller upper oven. The telescopic slider is useful when you cannot see if your food is ready - however, the light is pretty powerful and it is quite easy to just look through the oven door most of the time.
In my opinion, the main oven is the best bit of this model.
There are 10 functions included in this main oven. They include halogen light, rapid heat function, circotherm heat function, gentle cook function, pizza oven function, grill and circotherm grill, conventional oven and 2 cleaning functions.
The oven has a rapid heat setting which pre-heats the oven to your desired temperature in minutes. The circotherm function essentially distributes the air evenly around the oven to allow even cooking / baking. A good function is that this can also be combined with the grill, for example, if you are cooking a lasagne or fish pie. We have used this when making these dishes and found the consistency of the cooking is really good. Due to this technology, the flavours do not seem to spread to other things in the oven which is a real bonus. The gentle cook function is ideal for roasts and we have used this to good effect roasting meat, when a slower, lower temperature cook is required.
The pizza function is AMAZING, especially if you are making DIY pizza and need a lovely cooked dough with a crispy base. The oven sends most of its heat from below on this setting. This is my favourite function of this oven and means I do not have the hassle of firing up the pizza oven outside any more! (Which often is helpful in the UK when it is pouring with rain)
The conventional oven is recommended when baking. Personally, I have not really noticed the difference in cooking between that and the circotherm function - we have found baking goods cook well on either setting. There is a cooking setting that heats from below for baking flans etc which is also handy but rarely needed.
We rarely need to use the grill in the bottom oven on its own thanks to the upper oven, but as stated before, we will sometimes switch to the circotherm grill when finishing off certain foods in the main oven.
Both ovens are quiet both in use and afterwards when the cooling fan is on.
A great improvement with this model is the ease of cleaning. The front is easily wiped down and cleaned. The pop-in buttons make this much more manageable. Both ovens have a cleaning function, and have liners on the sides, back and top which self-clean. The self-clean takes about an hour. This does not have to be used that often in our experience. A great addition to the bottom oven is the bottom floor cleaning function (there is no self-cleaning plate on the floor of either oven). You simply place some water and washing up liquid on the bottom of the oven and turn this setting on for about 20 minutes. After that, any fat that has etched onto the enamel is easily wiped off. This is great when you feel that your oven needs a deep clean! (The glass doors can be removed to be cleaned but we have not done this).
In summary, this Neff oven is a great all-round double oven for a family or someone who likes cooking for groups. It is easy on the eye and Neff have done their best to ensure cleaning is straightforward. I would definitely recommend!
PROS - quiet, easy to use, good quality, looks great, lots of functions for versatility
CONS - no grill pan wire shelf, only one telescopic runner
